Worldbuilding Unbound
Quick facts
• Format: essay, framework, keynote, or workshop adaptation
• Focus: five principles for coherent, inclusive worldbuilding across fiction, education, institutions, and civic systems
• Applications: institutional alignment, education design, experience design, and future strategy
Overview
Worldbuilding has always been more than a creative tool for me-it's a way of seeing, shaping, and sharing the world. Whether I'm designing immersive performances, guiding students through imagined societies, or collaborating across cultures and disciplines, I return to the same question: how do we build worlds that matter?
Worldbuilding Unbound presents five guiding principles that apply across fiction, education, institutions, and civic systems-so worlds become inclusive, coherent, and alive.
The five principles
Ground the Vision - Building begins with knowing
See the Invisible - Recognize the worlds we already build
Design for Invitation - From control to collaboration
Play the World Alive - Embodied, immersive, and shared
Prototype the Possible - Tools for radical imagination
Applications (where this framework is used)
• Institutional worldbuilding: aligning vision, culture, and behavior
• Education and learning design: building shared language and participatory literacy
• Experience design: constructing worlds that sustain meaning beyond a single moment
• Future strategy: prototyping possible worlds before making irreversible commitments
Practical takeaway
Institutional value: coherence becomes visible when a world is designed through rules, invitation, rehearsal, and prototyping rather than rhetoric alone.
